The photos are not great quality - a lot of glare on them from the wet paint !!! A photographer - I am NOT ! And..I hadn't planned on making these photos into a demo. Sorry !

I set up some apples from the kitchen, and placed a light behind them. I wanted the shadow to fall forward in the painting.

Messy, messy studio !! It does get cleaned once a week (most weeks).

I roughly painted the placement of the apples using burnt umber and purple lake. The apples were green, but had a lot of yellow in them, so I thought the purple would provide a nice contrast. I loosely stated the shadow area.

Next I started blocking in with the local colour of the apples - not detail, just squinting my eyes at the apples to see where the light and dark areas were, and painting them in as I saw them.

Don't forget, this is a quick sketch !!

I added more colour, and thicker paint, to define the form of the apples - adding darker and lighter paint as I saw it.

Nothing fancy - but great practice as a warm up. No painting attempt is ever wasted. We always learn from everything we do. (I really need to learn how to get some good photos !!!!)
